Wally Hammond was pretty good for England

Whilst agreeing with u that Graham Thorpe was a relaible batsman for England, l am not convinced that he was England is most reliable middle-order batsman ever.

l often felt about Thorpe, certainly during the first half of his Test career, that he was essentially a selfish player, more interested in maintaining his average & safe-guarding his place in the side, than in playing for the team.

In the second half of his Test career he blossomed & became England is match winner. He could always be counted on to score runs at vital times.

However, the accolade of England is most reliable middle-order batsman should be bestowed on Ken Barrington. A Test average of 58.67 (compared to Thorpe is 44.66), 20 centuries (Thorpe 16), 35 half-centuries (Thorpe 39), & just 5 ducks (Thorpe 12), demonstrate a remarkable consistency throughout his 82 Tests & 131 innings. 42% of his Test innings went past 50. Thorpe went past 30% of the time.

But Barrington seems to be a forgotten figure nowadays.

l go along with Oracle, Barrington would have been my choice. He could flay an attack or just hang around holding an end up and defending.

l would say David Gower. His elegant knocks have won many matches for England.
