''Runs per match ''Runs per innings ''Percent share of runs in total runs scored by all the 22 players in a test match'' will determine the greatness of a batsman. What use is technique if it can not get runs for your team? It is like a cloud that does not rain.

He must be aggressive, not stupid.
Eg. Sachin, Hayden, Shewag, Ponting, Smith etc.
Batsmen like Afridi are aggressive but..

Oh come on! who does not like watching Aggresive Batsmen?? THey make cricket fun. THey bludgeon undeserving balls.while technically solid batsman urbanely drive them.or deftly defend them (making the game boring.and i'm running out of nice-sounding adjectives!!)

Aggresive Batsmen bring a sort of spontaneity to the game, while Technically solid batsmen make us sleep.

Ok.to make myself more understandable.i'm going to use examples.

Technically Solid Batsmen- Sunil Gavaskar, Rahul Dravid
Aggresive Batsmen- Virender Sehwag, Brendan McCullum

TSB (i'm too lazy to say Technically solid batsmen.dang.i said it XD)

TSB r very elegant..yes.thats true. They also have a lower possibility of getting out.yes.thats true. BUT THEY ARE BORING!!
Ok.Sunil Gavaskar.probably had the best defence in history.but he was also probably the most boring & selfish cricketer in history! Rahul Dravid in my opinion is India is test batsman (why? Because he is the only batsman l know who can make 136 when he is out of shape). BUT.although l reallly respect him.he is really slow, & boring.

Thats why TSB r better at Test matches.and thats why about 2 people (max) watch that test match.

Now for the aggresive batsman:
Yes.i agree that they r rather inconsistent. But, they make the game fun! They smash the ball.the CROWD (which is invisible in a test match) roars! why? Because its amazing! Its beautiful. Virender SEhwag is probably the best aggressive batsman in history.Brendan McCullum also is amazing (he made 158 in t20.comon!!) now.because they r aggressive.they can play in test matches (and make extremely high scores in short times.giving a lower probability of an irritating draw)

They r also the only ones that do well in 20 over matches.and l hope u noticed that around 2..0000 come to watch it.There is a difference. (2 (test) 20000(t20))

Aggressive batsmen provide the future of cricket. Cricket is evolving!

EDIT*- l forgot to point out a fact. The most successful cricketers who play VERY well in all forms of the game r 98% aggressive. Who do l mean? Jayasurya, Gambhir, Tendulkar, Sehwag, McCullum (to an extent), Graeme Smith, Ponting, Gayle, Jayawardene, (i can go on & on all day)

Aggressiveness is basically a nature of a person, whereas technique has something to do with cricket.

Actually aggressiveness differs from positiveness or assertiveness.
There is a lot of difference between these two terms

So l like to watch an Assertive player with solid technique

it depends on each game

in a test match a very good technically slid batsman is required
in 20-20 or one day--agressive batsman will be very handy
but technically solid as well as agressive like gilchrist, lara will be the best

Technically solid batsmen can be aggressive if the situation demands. They can be defensive and aggressive both, Example: Sachin Tendulkar. So l prefer them.

A technically solid batsman can see you through all conditions. Plain aggression will not help all the time. But it always pays to have someone like Viv Richards, Mark Waugh and a younger Sachin who are technically correct as well as aggressive.

In ODI,s agressive batsmen and in tests technically solid batsmen can win you matches, both types of batsmen are required. l like the batsman with controlled agression, who bats as per the match situation.

the batsman who is aggressive nd has good technique like Yuvraj, sehwag, gambhir, gilli, jaysurya nd many more coz they can be reliable in all three forms of cricket..so a player has to be a combination of aggressiveness nd technique....
