Does anyone know the significance of the number which appears on a test cricketers shirt, usually on the breast under the team logo? Is it the number of tests that individual has played or the number of tests between the two teams or something completely different?

So lets say Sachin Tendulkar has the number 100 on his shirt, that means he was the 100th player to play for India

l do not have any idea about this.

It represents when the person came to play for his country. Or what number player he was to represent his country. Or even, how many players made their debut for the team before that particular player.

So for example, when you hopefully watch the test between SAF and AUS this Friday, you will notice Michael Clarke has the number 389 on his baggygreen.

He was the 389th player to represent Australia in test cricket.

The number indicates the number of the plahyer to make debut. For example, if the Number is 100, it indicates that he is the 100th player to make debut for that country
