CRICKET legend Dennis Lillee last night hailed the ''coming of age'' of Mitchell Johnson after his young protege produced the greatest spell by an Australian paceman against South Africa.

Bowling from the Lillee-Marsh stand end made famous by his illustrious mentor, Johnson claimed 7-42 in a performance hailed as one of the most devastating of the modern era.

''It is very pleasing to see the coming of age of any fast bowler and on his new home ground Mitchell has stepped up to the role today to show he has definitely come of age as a Test bowler,'' Lillee said.

Great gesture by Dennis to appreciate a trully great effort by Mitchell. Its always heartening to see a former great coming forward to praise a young star of the modern era. It will help Johnson to have more faith in himself & will help his confidence immensely. One of the greatest performance in tests in recent times from Johnson. Come to think of it l can only recall Walsh getting 5-1 before Mitch got 5-2 yesterday. Brilliant stuff.

Mitch already has 2 five wicket haul from 16 tests, something which Brett Lee couldnt achieve. Lillee has obviously realised that he is one for the future & hence the comment.

It was a good performance and he does deserve the accolades. For this rare occasion l will compliment the selectors for sticking with Johnson. So often they have picked players and then dropped them without getting a decent go (just look at the poor spinners).

Great work and keep it up.

l dont know if it was his coming of age, because l think his tour of India was when Mitchell really felt at home Bowling for Australia. Hes a really good bowler, & having stood behind the nets & watched him bowl l can say there would be bowlers l would prefer to face. Especially with the number of short stuff he bowls. l think Mitchell has a solid spot in the team, & his 7 for yesterday on a dead track was an outstanding performance, however he needs to add a bit more variety to what he bowls. If he can develop his game a bit more, he can become one of the worlds premier express bowlers.

Id love to see him get 9 for today to finish up the innings!

l have always said that if Mitchell Johnson bowled straighter, he would be a huge force in World Cricket.

Remember when Warne bowled the ''wonderball'' in 93 and the world stood and noticed the great man.

Johnson is amazing spell yesterday made the world take notice of Mitchell Johnson, l believe he will be a huge force for Australia in the future.

l think his comments are 100% corrext mate. l told you last year to watch out for him.he is an ecxellent young bowler and we are only starting to see his stuff.Wait until he has the experience of Lee,to be honest l think he is going to be better than Lee..Not taking anything away from Lee,he is a top bowler but l see something in Mitchell Johnson and it is unreal.

Yeah, it was a fine gesture by Dennis Lillee on Mitchell Johnson.He has proved how lethal he can be.This was a much awaited performance from a bowler who has promised so much. l was wondering how well he would come up in tests, but it looks to me that he can be successful in tests.

All he needs to improve is to swing the ball towards the batsman,if he is able to do that he can be deadly

l agree whole heartedly with Lillee. l have been saying all along that Johnson has been very unlucky in most of the games he has played. He has had drop catches (sometimes several) just about every time he plays. It was only a matter of time before the luck swings in his favour and he is rewarded. Congrats to Johnson, l think in many ways he will be better than Lee.
